The Forer Effect

Psychologist Bertram R. Forer found that people tend to accept vague personality descriptions and generalized as applying uniquely to ourselves without realizing that the same description can be applied to anyone.

The Forer effect seems to explain, at least in part, why so many people believe that pseudoscience "work." Astrology, astrotherapy, biorhythms, fortune-telling, palmistry, the enneagram, fortune telling, graphology, etc. Seem to work because they seem to provide fairly accurate personality analysis.

The pseudo scientific studies have shown that these are not valid personality assessment tools, yet still appear quite convinced many satisfied customers for their accuracy. We tend to naively believe in horoscopes, astrological charts, psychics, tarot etc. Mistaken belief that we really are making a "personalized reading" The most common explanations given to explain the Forer effect are in terms of hopes, panting thought, conceit, and the tendency to try to make sense of the experience ... however Forer explanations were in terms of human ingenuity.

People tend to accept claims about us in our desire to share these claims are true rather than in proportion to empirical accuracy of the claims by some measures non-subjective standard. We tend to accept questionable claims, even false, about ourselves, if we consider them positive or flattering enough. We often give very liberal interpretations to vague or inconsistent claims on us to make sense.

People seeking advice from psychics, mediums, diviners, telepaths, handwriting, etc., often ignore false or questionable and, in many cases, by their own words or actions, provide most of the information later wrongly attributed to pseudoscientific counselor. Many of these people feel that their advisors provided them with deep and personal information. However, such subjective validation is of little scientific value. We often unwittingly give you clues about psychic predictions and astrologers to tell us when we really know nothing about us.

Psychologist Barry Beyerstein believes that "the desire and uncertainty evoke powerful psychological processes in the business maintains all the characters that are dedicated to the reading of occult and pseudoscientific." We are constantly trying to "make sense of the constant barrage of disconnected information which we are daily" and "we become so good at filling in the blanks and creating reasonable scenarios of disjointed information that sometimes even we find meaning in the absurd" . Often fill in the blanks and provide a coherent picture of what we hear and see, even though a careful examination of the evidence would reveal that the information is vague, confusing, obscure, inconsistent, and even incomprehensible.

Psychic predictions mediums, for example, often ask so many disconnected and ambiguous questions in rapid succession to give the impression of having access to personal knowledge of their subjects. In fact, the psychic predictions does not need any knowledge of the subject's personal life as the subject voluntarily and unknowingly provide all the associations and validations necessary. Psychic predictions will assist in this process using cold reading techniques.

Astrology and divination methods are a sham.  Do not be fooled!

However, the Forer effect only partially explains why so many people accept as correct procedures or pseudo hidden personality assessment. Cold Reading, the communal reinforcement, and selective thinking are also behind these deceptions. In addition, it must be admitted that while many of these statements in a reading assessment are vague and generalized pseudo-scientific, some are specific. Some that are specific in fact apply to large numbers of people and some, by chance, is good for some selected descriptions. You must wait a number of specific evaluative statements by chance.
